Green Team
What is it? Who leads it? Who are the members?
Ecology or Environmental Committee
Green teams range form a simple recycling and waste reduction effort to facility wide initiative. Go to www.h2e-online.org for a comprehensive description of a variety of Environmental Programs
Key point: All Environmental teams should be multi disciplinary comprised of representatives from:
• Environmental Services
• Facilities,
• Safety
• Nursing
• Medical staff
• Materials management
• Radiology
• Laboratory
• Pharmacy
• Representation from direct care clinicians is crucial to the success of a program
Set goals. Write a mission statement. The mission statement will be dynamic and change as your program grows. Get started. Have fun.
Tips and Tricks for success:
Be visible
• Newsletter Communication is a great way to be known
Regular posting from your green team.
This is a good way to educate staff
• Name your group. Initials can become a name. (In one facility the official name is Environmental Impact Committee or the EIC. The nickname became EICKY committee)
• Have regular events. These can be centered on a theme such as Earth Day, Commute Another Way Day, America Recycles Day (November 15). Nurses Day, OR Nurses Week.
Contests help learning:
Trash Trivia Test
Employees were sent regular facts on recycling and our program for six to eight weeks through our newsletter. An event with display by the Café was held to celebrate America Recycles Day. At this event each participant took a Trash Trivia Test based on the fact that had been posted previously. The results were positive. Some participants passed with flying colors and some failed miserably. But all learned and had fun. Prizes were awarded to all participants.
Commute Another Way Day
Our approach to CAWD for our rural region with limited to no public transportation was to focus on fuel efficiency and better driving habits. Participants were asked to pledge to actively focus on driving habits. The pledge card was entered in a drawing for tire pressure gauges, compact fluorescent lights and the grand prize a trip to Boston on the DownEaster,
